That kind of system can work with analog subjects in analog spaces, but it's also ideal for ingesting into digital space. This is like how optical discs started out as analog tech with Laserdisc, which then expanded to digital audio and eventually became the digital audio CD.
The older Pokeballs seem to use compression and pneumatics to keep Pokemon small and contained. It's explicitly not something they can do without human technology, or a freak natural event. If it was an innate ability, we would see Pokemon choosing to grow or shrink to suit their environment or situation. It just doesn't happen.
I'm not saying Pokemon don't shrink or grow. We know they can, but it requires energy. It's not an innate power. Dynamax only occurs because the Galar region radiates energy, and Pokemon only shrink because there are containers made for the express purpose of containing them.
It's sci-fi shit. Sentai shit, Ultraman shit. Where growing big is a result of alien DNA or machines or radiation. Rarely is it because every species of animal, who each have unique magic powers, also happen to share this power but just never use it freely.
