It really just depends on your team composition. I went into the Elite 4 with most of my team not even being level 50 yet and I beat them pretty comfortably. Just try to have good type coverage and I would say that Psychic/Ice/Electric coverage is probably the most important to make sure you have..

FRLG were the only games I couldn't beat when they were new. I got stuck on Lance for years which pissed me off because when I came back to beat it as an adult the Sevii Islands were so cool.

Yeah, XY would be way easier because of that. Still easy without it, but it's a tremendous difference. It's just basic math.
