They also work as a support studio, for games like Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 3, and Mario Kart World.
Xenoblade 2 is noted as having design and graphical shortcomings, owing to the main team working as Breath of the Wild support at the time; their later Xenoblade entries on Switch don't exhibit nearly that many shortcomings and their engine continuously improved. Something was fucky with their Switch 2 Edition of Xenoblade X though, like it got rushed out.
Game Freak by comparison, regardless of perceived talent, have to work to a strict schedule because their games dictate the flow of new merchandise sales (especially including TCG) or anime episodes, and there has to be synergy between them to help promote sales of the next hot new characters.
Production pipelines have to align so that new merch is ready in the same window.
