Having to animate 500000 animations per pokemon led to work bloat which meant they didn't have time to polish the games properly. The Gen 6 and 7 games ran like hot ass, to the point that turning on the 3d actively tanked the game's FPS. Gen 8 had terrible looking and performing wild areas, and on top of that the routes were incredibly cut down, likely the fault of having to task more and more people with animating and texturing the pokemon. Gen 9 is, well, we already know. Graphics aren't everything in pokemon but wow they are just fucking terrible.
Secondarily, I think there's been something lost in 3d. There used to be a certain charm in getting new sprite art of a pokemon every generation, sometimes new sprites in a new game within the generation.
Skarmory is a great example, since he's been in literally every game since his inception, getting unique artwork every generation and now he's basically had the same model since XY. Sure, its probably not THE same model but its animated the same, that gliding/floating pose he does. Sure he's got animations now but every time you encounter Skarmory hes doing that same fucking pose and animation. Then, this eventually lead to Dexit, as animating an entire suite of animations for all 900+ pokemon at the time was simply unfeasible. I don't necessarily think dexit was a huge deal, but not knowing if one of my favorites will be available at all in a new game is a giant blow.
