That's the difference. They didn't add gimmicks until the first Gen they were actually in danger of fucking the series with, the first games in full 3D. Because frankly, without the new bells and whistles, 6-8 were pedestrian affairs and without them, I don't think kids would have fallen as readily for its charms as they did.
