It could work for the ZA cast who are obviously teens or early 20’s, but Japan has a taboo about depicting prepubescent kids in romantic situations. This is why Ash never got an official gf in the anime, and why the protagonists from earlier games never had relationships despite hints being dropped that some characters had feelings for you. Japan has a literary trope that a boy and a girl who play together as kids will grow up to get married someday, so this is pretty much all that they’ll ever do for the Pokéchildren who never age aside from the rare timeskips like adult Red and Blue cameoing in Gen 7 and Emma in ZA.

You should consider trying Pokemon Academy Life Forever out. It looks like the type of game that would be dogshit, but it's actually really good as a Pokemon VN. Hasn't really gotten too far as far as romance is concerned yet, but it seems like you'll be able to romance quite a decent amount of Pokemon girls, including Alto Mare Latias.

I think Misty is supposed to be the same age as Ash, but fans assumed she was slightly older since she was aged up in the Electric Tale of Pikachu manga and was already a gym leader by the time Ash got his first Pokemon.
