Unova is poorly balanced. Either your -10 level Pokemon is one-shoting everything or your +10 is not doing any damage. You have to be at the same level and box OP Pokemon to have any interesting battles.

No, HGSS were just dogshit at balancing because the game's level curve was not adjusted for the absence of Badge Boost, Type Boost and the use of modern EVs over Stat EXP.
This isn't a GSC scenario where you can thug it out with 1-3 level 40s because they're doped up on boosts that basically make them equivalent to a level 50, you either actually reach 45+ or you get raped because your comparatively limited EVs are absolutely going to be dogshit from how many turd fodders you've been grinding out at all prior point sin the game.

Only open up after Clair, and are basically just grinding if you actively seek them out and call them up, since they don't call you directly much at all. Your take boils down to "i-it's not an issue if you just grind!" aka exactly why it is an issue.

growth is stunted in the back half of johto which means pokemon are going to be stuck with their mid-tier 20s and early 30s moves for a long time. and if you've got something that evolves late, it's going to evolve REALLY late. this doesn't make the game unbearably difficult but it is less interesting.

I do. Always have. The majority of the game is against NPCs with vastly lower levels than you before randomly jumping up to give you one (1) decent fight in Clair which is less to do with the levels and more about how good Kingdra is especially against the Kanto/Unova rosters then completely falls off again. It's a boring fucking game with the most embarrassingly easy fights in the series in the Morty-Hideout stretch and Kanto's glorified Boss Rush.
Even worse if it's GSC because then you have badge boosts injecting your Pokemon with steroids.

Its not even skipping battles and losing exp. Its the sheer misconception of "must be equal levels with every major fight!!!" The way Gen 2 works is that once you're done with Johto, you got a whole ass other region to pick clean. If we had to go by the logic of Gen 1 and have a team of level 60+ facing against the Elite Four, then every fight in Kanto should include teams ranging from 75 to uhhh 120?????? Not only this makes no sense gameplay wise but it would also turn Kanto into a slog trying to go through every fight against massively leveled teams. Could there be some slight improvements? Absolutely but there's no such problem taking place, its just another case of people being convinced about an issue online by e-celebs and the like just because it was well presented.
