It's because the word for dinosaur in Japanese is "Kyoryu" which literally means "Scary Dragon". Hence why several Dino-mons get the dragon typing. See also the Stegosaurus half of the Galarian fossils giving dragon-type, Baxcalibur being a Spinosaurus, and the Paradox Tower Trio being a Ceratopsian, Sauropod, and Dromeosaur.

I feel like the amount of people who know that Tytantrum is based on King Louis "The Sun King" is rather low (the ancient Kalos king is also based on the same person btw. that's why the palace has sun pokemon shaped hedges and also Lysandre is very very very obviously related to the ancient king and he has fiery hair)

Tyrantrum is a tyrant king. The Japanese have a long history of calling the emperor or other social elites or people of great skill/prestige "dragons". (The move Outrage is Imperial Rage in Japanese) Calling someone a dragon is essentially a shorthand for saying they're the apex, the ultimate. It's clearly fitting of a T-rex, especially when you factor in the more cynical European view of dragons hoarding wealth and being greedy menaces which is also what Tyrantrum does.

Dont get fooled, it took massive restraint from the team to hold back on making Tyrantrum not look retarded, just look at all their starters since gen5, the king theme is light enough but they could have given him a pot belly and a dumb looking cape and a silly looking scepter and an actual tiny crown.

I actually like Tyrunt more. Something about his stance is just more appealing.

As someone has stated, in asian countries dinosaurs are just referred to as dragons.
Chinese names of dinosaurs all translate to shit like "Violence Dragon" and "Triangle Dragon" and what not, in media like One Piece all the devil fruits that turn you into Dinosaurs are "Ryu Ryu no mi" with Ryu meaning Dragon. The japanese word for Dinosaur is basically Fear Dragon, etc. etc.
If anything its moreso restraint on their part that they didnt make every other dinosaur fossil part dragon as well.

They knew it would be popular but they also knew it was a shitty design so they waited until they ran out of ideas. Whenever people talk about Pokemon that don't look like Pokemon they always forget Tyrantrum, which is just a cartoony dinosaur that belongs in Fossil Fighter not Pokemon. It reminds me of the stories of the American market trying to decide how to make Pokemon designs appeal to western audiences. Tyrantrum is one of the most western appealing designs and nothing about it says "Pokemon".
