Really great dex apart from a few horrible misses like Volbeat and Grumpig, with very high highs. Actually betrayed fan expectactions but in a conscious manner: they deliberately did it to push the designs to new heights both in artistic vision and - due to the technological leap from gen 2 - complexity.

Hoenn had the best mons and human protagonists in terms of design.
But in terms of the game itself I still prefer Johto, Sinnoh, and Unova.
GBA was not developed enough to let Hoenn shine in its full glory.
Same thing for ORAS, Game Freak was not ready for 3D.

Gen 3 had the largest % of coolmons. So much so that they had to tone it down in following generations. Gen 3 is the quintessential boy gen, hence why it's so popular here.

Fantastic games. I really love the mixing records feature, and secret bases in general. There's also nothing like discovering sealed chamber or sky pillar for yourself the first time as a kid. Oh and I'm pretty sure May and the player chick from the first Ranger awoke something in me

That's like 6 Pokémon for the Pokédex, the game is front-loaded because they couldn't decide if they wanted a full on reboot. You can't even catch a non-Hoenn Pokémon until Dewford.

Probably my favorite standalone dex in the series, more of my favorites are gen 3 than any other.
Lotta shitmons though, the early game is kind of a slog if you don't transfer/hack much more interesting pokemon into the early game.
Second half of the region sucks, but the first half up into Fortree is pretty solid, very interconnected in a way that makes getting where you want to be easy. Even if there's rarely a reason.
I don't like the Kyogre/Groudon plot nowadays, but it was cool in the past.
Unironically too much water, I hate Wingull to this fucking day.
Good music.
Ruby and Sapphire desperately needed better postgame content. Just because Emerald has good postgame content doesn't mean Ruby and Sapphire get a pass.

Rocket in Johto is one of the lowest points of the series, I say this as someone who generally despises gen 6 onwards, and likes gen 2 as a whole.
Spending 2 hours fighting level 15 Ratata and Koffing with your level 30-40 pokemon is the worst.

I forgot how absolutely ASS catching legendaries was in Gen 3 compared to later generations. Just giving Parasect/Breloom an ability that isn't effect spore is a god damn game changer, especially when the only possible Pokemon I could potentially get both Spore and False Swipe on that doesn't have Effect Spore is Smeargle and thus isn't going to be available until Emerald.

I'm unironically using Compoundeyes Sleep Powder Butterfree as my sleeper on my second file while shiny hunting because my Effect Spore Parasect killed TWO Deoxys in a row by poisoning it through contact while it was at 1 HP. Why the fuck is this a thing?

Magma and Aqua combined in Ruby and Sapphire have fewer Pokémon than literally any other team.

Emerald adds a Magma Grunt with a Baltoy and an Aqua Grunt with a Wailmer, and ORAS adds Koffing/Weezing to Magma and Grimer/Muk to Aqua. I posted earlier in another thread that Team Magma and Aqua literally share almost 100% of their dialogue outside of the leaders, with just Magma/Aqua replaced. Even the Admins have identical dialogue between versions, Courtney is the exact same character as Shelly in RS.
