Why do Pokemon fans insist the mainline games must retain the exact same formula?

It's always the same. Start in small town, pick from three designated starters (always grass, fire, water), go on an adventure to win 8 gym badges, defeat the new gimmick organization, capture the designated legendary, then take on the elite 4.

Of course, if this formula changed, long-time autistic fans would be angered. Why?
