He scored higher than Decidueye in the JP poll for SM mons. The Alola starters are all comparable in that aspect, like the Hoenn/Sinnoh ones. There isn’t a guaranteed winner or loser in terms of fan appeal.

They usually are just awkwardly between two different niches and ultimately fail to fill both of them properly.
While we can agree that Greninja is objectively an awful Pokemon and a straight downgrade to Frogardier, it's actually somewhat viable competitively and had all the cool hype moments in anime.

In pokemon, the only real notable exceptions is with cross gen evos, because the now middle form was actually designed as complete. And then a small fistful of outliers, where the middle form doesn't look like incomplete garbage.

This is really only a Pokemon problem, and a problem of games that try to ape it. Shit like Digimon doesn't really have this issue, plenry of people quite like, or even prefer middle forms, because those middle forms are designed to work by themselves usually.

In-universe, it's been less than a year since Ash and Serena parted ways, so it's purely a matter that Braixen was more marketable to use while Serena was a mainstay, and once she left and would be reduced to returning throwback character, they had no problem evolving Braixen into Delphox because Braixen was no longer being actively shilled and didn't cement itself as an ubershill like Piplup.

Alola barely had any mons to pick and choose from just like Kalos, Decidueye only got as high as it did because it was riding the coattails of Rowlet, who became a Piplup-tier shillmon. It's the same reason Empoleon got into Pokken, they're both there to represent their base stages because the base stages aren't practical for a fighter like Pokken.

And if it had been a sidekick to Ash and Pikachu, instead of trying to steal Pikachu nearly every episode, maybe they wouldn't have felt the need to repaint it. But they repainted it - TWICE (because the first time everyone hated Nermal the Persian). GF legitimately thought Incineroar was going to be the next Charizard because it looks strong, manly, is a Fire type and is even associated with wrestling. Generally speaking these are all elements young boys should like. However its proportions are just so awkward that not even the target demographic ever got to appreciate it.
