Men being the "provider" in a relationship here in the west is a very internalized thing, and making less than your wife is seen as a shameful thing that calls your worth as a man into question. It's possible, if unlikely, but there is a potential basis for it. I'm not even saying I believe it despite playing devil's advocate, just that it's not an impossibility.
