There are a lot of indies who's channel not monetized, they don't have fanbox, there is zero income for them from streaming while they paid for avatar and commissions for art quite a bit. For them it's a hobby, they stream after busy day at work just to play vidya and socialize with vtubers like them and random strangers.
My oshi gets like $100 per month in superchats, hates her job and dreams about careless life when she could just do what she likes and earn a living that way instead. But she's not popular enough to make any decent money, and probably never will because she's doing only what she's genuinely enjoy rather than try to entertain or pander to a specific audience, she's not lewd, doesn't provide GFE, doesn't play popular games. She's a huge autist, so her activities are way too niche to attract many people. So she cares about money a lot, but still chooses the least profitable way. I'm afraid if someone starts shilling her and she'll become popular, she'd just quit because she's not prepared to deal with schizos and antis that she'd inevitably get.
For corporate chuubas, money is just one part of it, there is also attention and support from the fans that many chuubas develop attachment to. Look at this and say she was in it for the money:

Throughout her career she never did anything to manipulate her audience into giving her more money, even though she could easily go GFE route. Instead she just played games like no one else could.

Aloe/Deluta admitted that she previously only cared about the money and numbers. Now she relies on her savoiurfags as a therapy, they also pay for her living of course, but even if she had to find a job, she'd still need them for venting out.
