They recently lost a war with their Eastern neighbor lead by Viktor Hoshenchev, the equivalent of Ivan the Terrible, leading the rough equivalent of the Russia Empire, over Halychaland or the Lakelands, the central territories. Our characters start in a prisoner train of a gang of bandits (perhaps deserters?), in the Nebel Valley, it's mid-winter, a couple of weeks out from Epiphany, the continent's equivalent of Christmas.
