Personally I remember when I started watching anime I was cringing at those jokes, but they're so common in otaku media I've grown completely desensitized to them like so many other dumb jokes which makes recommending stuff to normie friends a pain. As a rule of thumb, making fun of physical appearance is the lowest form of comedy. It works especially as a side dish when you know what you are doing, but most people don't.
