Every waking hour is a struggle for survival as supplies are low.", I would do something like "Man, I really am enjoying this pizza. Oh cool the sun is up. Wait isn't it 10PM?" kind of feel. Basically instead of after the apocalypse, the fic would be as it happens. The horrendous reality of it all as you try to survive being almost at the epicenter of one of the first nukes to strike what would be a global war that wipes out most of the world in the first few hours. And then, you know, there's chuubas too.
