China's stance is focused on denying the US access to a slowly expanding area, which is bleeding the US dry as it tries to come up with countermeasures that allows it to keep access. That and other engagements have left the US military too overstretched to attack China with the sort of overwhelming force that their doctrine and politics ask for, so a fight would become one of attrition. After a few weeks or even days without a decisive victory and the loss of a large chunk of its naval forces and maybe a base or two, the largely demoralized population of the US would demand a stop to the war, or just start an insurrection, which is a current worry and why the US military is starting to get turned against its own citizenry. The time for that war was 20-30 years ago but the US was too busy shitting its pants over petty dictators in the Middle East and going apeshit over fucking anthrax letters. So, sadly, we'll never get to see pic related.
