I'd much rather talk about dinosaurs than rrats, but on topic of rats, this cat-sized critter managed to survive the single worst extinction event that ever hit Earth (90% of all life died out) and lived pretty far into Triassic period just by being a very good generalist. Some areas had 95% of their local species be some variation of a Lystrosaurus. A single genus dominating the land to this degree has never been seen on Earth ever since, it's genuinely insane to think about. Naturally, they died out once dinosaurs started popping up.
