Index is only awful until you realize the deeper subtexts. His antimagic hand is an allegory for chronic masturbation. Misaka is a girl at school he fantasizes about. Except the imaginary one doesn't remember him, and nothing he ever does to her will ever matter. But there's also the real one, the one who can remember him, but he has to face his crippling social anxiety in order to meet her. He has to struggle, and make friends with her friends, in order to come to terms with his antimagic hand, and get the real Misaka to like him. This is why they try to kill him in the beginning, but actually turn out to be very chill. It doesn't make sense if viewed naively, but once the deeper meanings are taken into account, everything snaps into place.
When I finally grasped it, it really affected me at a deep level. It kind of hurts because I've had problems with chronic masturbation all my life, and I'm glad I have so many people who must share my problems in the greater Magical Index fanbase.
