For XL models you want to use the resolutions in the picrel for generating, it was trained on much higher res but other than that generally 20 steps min and cfg 5-7 are the go to but you can experiment. Batch of 4 and img2img is how I do it but some just use hi-res, up to you how you want to do it
2.I use square res of 1024x1024 at 20 steps, if you are using "only masked" option, if "whole picture" you want that to be the same res as your base image.

4. I recommend against it in the beginning, speedwise forge webui should give you just as much. It is good to learn eventually though.
A lot of this stuff is written in the vtai wiki in the OP, note it was a bit more for the 1.5 models but the general idea is the same.
