Acid rains, air quality deteriorating to the point humans require implanted air filtration devices just to breathe normally, and so on. All but the hardiest and most adaptable of plants and animals would be extinct in the wild. Greenhouses with carefully controlled growing environments existed, but their products would've been extreme luxuries available only to the richest of the rich.
