Indonesia was a Dutch colony for hundreds of years, the Japanese occupied them from 1942-1945 where they did most of their mass genocide/slavery shit. However another side effect is that they pretty much destroyed the Dutch armies, and when the Japanese surrendered themselves this left a power vacuum the Indonesian independence movement exploited to start and succeed in their war of independence.
So in other words a REALLY CHARITABLE interpretation of events is that the Japanese did "save" Indonesia from the Dutch.
