>Bupropion, sold under the brand names Wellbutrin and Zyban among others, is an atypical antidepressant primarily used to treat major depressive disorder and to support smoking cessation.[14][15] It is also popular as an add-on medication in the cases of "incomplete response" to the first-line selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant.[15][16] Bupropion has several features that distinguish it from other antidepressants: it does not usually cause sexual dysfunction;[15] it is not associated with weight gain[15] and sleepiness,[17] and it is more effective than SSRIs at improving symptoms of hypersomnia and fatigue.[18] Bupropion does, however, carry a much higher risk of seizure than many other antidepressants and extreme caution must be taken in patients with a history of seizure disorder.
>Common adverse effects of bupropion with the greatest difference from placebo are dry mouth, nausea, constipation, insomnia, anxiety, tremor, and excessive sweating.[19] Raised blood pressure is notable.[20] Rare but serious side effects include seizure,[19] liver toxicity,[21] psychosis,[22] and risk of overdose.[23] Bupropion use during pregnancy may be associated with increased odds of congenital heart defects.[24]
>Escitalopram, sold under the brand names Lexapro and Cipralex, among others, is an antidepressant of the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) class.[3] Escitalopram is mainly used to treat major depressive disorder and generalized anxiety disorder.[3] It is taken by mouth,[3] available commercially as an oxalate salt exclusively.
>Common side effects include trouble sleeping, nausea, sexual problems, and feeling tired.[3] More serious side effects may include suicidal thoughts in people up to the age of 24 years.[3] It is unclear if use during pregnancy or breastfeeding is safe.[4] Escitalopram is the (S)-enantiomer of citalopram (which exists as a racemate), hence the name es-citalopram.[3]
