That's probably also why you compare it to Shigatsu when the drama in that series is entirely contrived garbage that only serves to make the audience cry. That's what melodrama actually means in the modern sense, series where the drama is front and center for the sake of making the audience feel things rather than developing the characters within their own world. This is also true of scenes in otherwise romcom shows like Toradora that cheat their way into getting the audience emotionally attached to characters by quickly injecting melodramatic scenes before dropping them entirely in the following episode after that character's arc is resolved in the last 3 minutes of the episode. Simply playing sad music and suddenly revealing that a random character actually has a hard life despite no indication of it for the entire series up to that point and no relevance to the story after that point is pretty much the laziest form of melodrama and why people shit on drama shows in general. It's the kinda shit you expect from YA novels and Disney Channel shows.
