To me, there's no end of official and high-quality fan art that depicts my favourite chuubas, and that's great, and most of what media I consume is in the 'pure' style.
But have you ever had those moments where you like two different things, and by pure miracle a fusion of both things come out? take for example, if you're a huge fan of Age of Empires 2, but also Star Wars, then Galactic Battlegrounds (basically just a SW skin for AoE2) will obviously be something you'd love to try out. Yeah, it you might end up going back to AoE2 most of the time, since it is the better and longer-standing design, but the fusion was an enjoyable sidetrack.
That's how I see the off model and off character generations here. Sure, you can see a bunch of Towas out there, and even a lot of variants within official and on model depictions, but what if you're just a big sucker for girls in motorcycle helmets, and you know she's not likely to ever be depicted like that in any official capacity. Wouldn't you enjoy, if just for that one moment, to see her with the Bibihelmet? maybe in an artstyle you also like?
It never replaces the original, but using the chuuba as an anchor point, you're able to explore and enjoy your interests in a wide brush while remaining connected to that recognizable identity.
I've mentioned it before here, but I don't actually watch vtubers, I don't really like streaming, but to me, vtubers represent an alternate reality where there were only ever like, 20 animes ever made. So in this instance, everyone has a favourite, and they exist eternally, never going "out of season" or being the "flavour of the month". It's like they stop being characters and start being concepts in and of themselves, and they tie it all together IMO. Most of what I make might as well have been posted to /h/ or some equivalent, but what I get to enjoy is that when I make something that people enjoy here, I can be asked not to make "one with a brunette" or "one with an asian", but I can be asked to make a version with a character and actress that someone genuinely is attached to, and that attachment makes it all the more worthwhile to make.
Wow, this turned out a lot longer than I intended, hope it's all readable.
