Maybe it could be a Deadbeat ship (probably a corvette, the crews of the ships of the line and such are narratively unwieldy for a melee battle) getting caught out by some stratagem, forcing a boarding action? I like writing in the present more, just because I've thought about this period much more than the past, as far as equipment are concerned.
Oh, or maybe the /meat/ ship could have some precious cargo that must not be damaged, thus the Deadbeats have to board the ship to capture it, for better or for worse? Some kind of rescue mission.
