I really enjoyed Sonny's Super Mario Sunshine stream today! These games were never a part of my childhood - so it's been really nice getting a bit of that experience vicariously through his gameplay and his occasional anecdotes about his experience. The story about asking his parents to search for information about glitches and print them out for him was adorable and triggered my nostalgia hard.
There was a lot of discussion /here/ during the stream about Sonny's game commentary. I've mostly given my two cents on that, but I think my favorite moments this stream were the ones where he talked about something insightful I wouldn't have noticed or known about otherwise - things like how the upscaling from Gamecube to Switch really showed in some of the graphics or talking about how the level design was inspired by Super Mario World, or just showing off interesting glitches he'd somehow memorized. That's fairly unique content and I'd love to see more of that from him, but it's not easy to cover hours of airtime with high-quality commentary. Sometimes you've just got to shout 'chocolate chicken poop yum!' in a cutesy voice to fill time, and you know what? I guess I'm here for that too.
Thanks for listening to my TED talk. I really hope these weekly PST-friendly retro (?) game streams continue to be a thing. They're at a good time to pick up viewers familiar with the game in chat and it's just nice being able to catch Sonny live at a relatively normal time.
