The foundation of comedy is built on this very concept. Sometimes the most sincerest and funniest conversations need to come from someone intentionally playing up a character and picking what they're saying apart to reveal things they otherwise would never say if they where being "themselves". On a deeper level, most people put on a "character" when out in public and interacting with strangers.
Obviously this doesn't always work. A random anon purposely being retarded and shitposting is not worth humoring. The other person can put on a character but they also need to be willing to engage and be open instead of making the mistake of doubling down and saying no to probing questions.
