i've talked about it before one of the sites i manage went viral on ticktock so it got flooded with non-donating children who flood the chats talking about naruto and attack on titan to the extent the site was unusable for regular long term users
ticktock kids are leeches but they force out all the non-leeches who don't want to put up with
the site i manage is a community funded self-hosted vod-site so the options are shut down or eat the costs, while youtube or twitch cover the server costs for you, everything about the quality and sustainability of your community is still out of your hands and trying to appeal to less desirable audiences to up your numbers for an ego boost is like trapping wasps in your car so you can brag about how many are in your car while nobody else wants to carpool and give you coffee/gas money
i might not be an expert on cultivating audiences but once those wasps start to build a nest without you noticing it's fucking over bros
