Or just run-of-the-mill popular kid, middle schoolers can be really impressionable. Other than that, nothing new under the sun. Where I'm from, the emo kids got bullied for being mentally ill freaks, so they ended up making a point of keeping their wrists pristine. But had there been someone telling everyone self-harm makes you really cool, I could see them going the exact opposite way and some of the bullies, the hangers-on that they are, hopping in on the trend to boot.
