I never could wrap my head around comfy's merging nodes, but on a1111/forge/reforge there's an extension called 'Untitled Merger' with some merging options not available on the stock merger or supermerger. 'Enhanced auto interp', 'Enhanced man interp' and 'Comparative interp' merge types with the preset sliders all seem to put out results with a LOT less of the blocky noise than other merge types I've tried.
