In my opinion, it would not be a wasted period. Since there appears to be a perimeter of traversable sea, training with the local navies may happen.
/inf/ diplomats and other officials that were with us would be given a place to stay and have to work at their embassy for the time being. I believe that embassies and trade offices would be turned into de-facto governments to coordinate foreigners.
