Unlike many other languages, east-asian languages mostly use symbols. No matter how long you listen, you cannot intuit these symbols, you must study them to learn them. There is no 'sounding out' words with the symbols, they just represent things in whole. Because of this, many people will not be able to wrestle with the language to learn it until actually studying it.
