Going by the rentry it seems like some of the more obscure one's have an effect, but that just makes experimenting all the harder since there doesn't appear to be a rhyme or reason as to what kaomoji work. Like >_< has 43k booru entries and doesn't work at all but o3o has only 2.3k and has some effect.
