First one is that numbered gens play into the seniority aspect of the sempai/kouhai relationship of japanese culture, something inexistent in western culture or at least not as prevalent(It will still apply though since japanese company and all)
The second is the fact that a theme helps flesh out an identity a lot more than a number, even more so in regards of cover future plans of expansion for the brand(see: hololive metaverse)
IMO is a smart decision, given how it also provides a space for crafting narratives out of the pre-stablished lore to work with and fans to play into(see fanart, fanfics, etc.)
Still i agree on the most people won't care as much and still use numbers to refer to them.
