Riichi
Riichi is a hand that is established by declaring Riichi when one is ready to win (tenpai) and has not made any open melds (no Pon or Chi). To declare Riichi, you must pay 1000 points, but once declared, it qualifies as a hand regardless of its form, and it can combine with various other hands, potentially leading to unexpectedly high scores. If you are in tenpai without open melds, you should try declaring Riichi often as a beginner.
