I do think you should try to plan out things to do ahead of time and go for a con or some other event but that's just because it's how I plan trips for myself.
I don't think there's really a spider season unless you live in some outback town or something. Stick to the major cities and you probably won't even run into any spiders unless you're here for a year plus.
