He gets cocky, completely unashamed about doing them in private, but I have a plan - while we're shopping at a busy mall together I unexpectedly ask him to sit and give paw. He falters, falling silent and wide eyed, so I repeat myself firmly. Red faced, he slowly gets down onto his knees, then extends one hand (that he's curled as if it were a paw) up into mine, cocking his head to the side. Of course people are watching, but getting his reward and my affection is more important to him than giving into humiliation.
