I've put a decent amount of thought into this but the greeks are probably one of the longest existing cultures and has had the hardest fall off of any culture bar none, it's hard to say that a culture peaked almost 2400 years ago and its continued to exist since then getting worse and worse at everything. Greeks had colonies all over the Med and kingdoms all the way into modern day Uzbek. Yeah, you have the greekness of the Eastern Roman empire, but they considered themselves "Rhomaioi"- Roman, until pretty recently. The modern Greek identity was re-established just so they could make a unified Greek state with a unified culture group. Look at the absolute state of Greece today and tell me it's fine, they almost broke an entire continents currency with how bad they are with money. Greece was given the western parts of Anatolia and they couldn't even fucking wrangle that shit together
