I wonder if the drowning is BOTH a metaphor and something very real, would be very funny. And I agree with the loop where he kept against his will in theory, "so cruelly prolonged" and him always addressing someone in lyrics like "just let me feel at peace", seems to hint at something like this...
God, it's so interesting, I love the way he's treating his lore like a kaleidoscope, for everyone to turn around and see some patterns in. Going to think more about it.
