I know it's a tired trope but I've been racking my brain for a show that would have been my core memory, I remember dreaming it and feeling the sense of peace of being a character in that universe. It has a group of heroes and villains yadayada everyone gets along and has jolly time in this circumstance except the leader of the villains (similar to ERB characterwise) who fights their reappearing own demon/past-self until they experience an ego death and get controlled by the one orchestrating everyone's memory loss. It's either an anime ova/movie or some pre-2010 RPGs.
