If theoretical differences are not the only grounds for splits, what causes them?
It is my impression that the general thread takes on the role of the family. Much of what was experienced in the family gets played out at the imageboard level, in spite of everyone being anonymous.
a hypothetical scenario: Two prolific anons can be vying for the “soul” of a particular general and they have differing views of the essential ingredients of a good post.
The tension between the two may go on for years, but then something happens; perhaps a post doesn't get enough (you)s or gets way too much and of the negative kind depending upon the prevailing attitude of the particular general. The anon whose shitpost is not being praised takes this personally and protests. Not satisfied with the response, the anon then decides to solicit others to join forces with him/her and form another general where its fellow shitposters will be treated more fairly. The general issue here is how anons deal with peers; only the oldest oldfags did not have to deal with this problem
