Assuming Lumi is in her early to mid 20s the 2008 financial crash happened right smack in the middle of her adolescence. Her parents were most likely in high-level finance and/or business and were significantly affected by this and probably lost their jobs but recovered relatively quickly as they got new jobs and advanced in status. This is what she means when she says she "grew up poor but then her parents got better" because she has no real context of what being poor actually means.
