But that is truly tragic and I pray for Shondo. She doesnt strike me as religious but tell her to always embrace hope and never give in to despair and tell her "Our Lord Jesus Christ sacrificed His life for us, not to to free us from suffering, but to transform suffering into the currency of redemption." Since she is going through suffering at the moment, it would be good for her to use that suffering as the currency of her redemption especially in this time of Lent.
