Before the 1st fleet got there what the fuck was going on in that continent then.It's pretty simple, 50~ years ago the Hunters Guild noticed that Elder Dragons would all migrate toward a direction, so they followed them, which lead to the discovery of an entirely new continent, which lead to the guild periodically sending out hunters, scientist, and engineers to expore
Fast forward 50 years year and you're apart of a fleet that's specifically following a huge fuck-off dragon known as Zorah Magdaros. At first you're mostly trying to track where's it going, until you find out the reason Elder Dragons come here is to die, and when Zorah dies he'll explode and potentially destroy a large chunk of the new world
The reason you have to kill so many of these Elders is cause they're not actually natural to ecosystem (Tho Nergigante "helps" keep the balance stable in the sense that he eats other Elder Dragons)
