There's a distinct fanbase and culture that elevates it, and the girls associated with it, from everything else in the vtuber world. Nimi might not be in Hololive anymore, but she was Hololive material through and through. That's why she's not an "indie", she's and "ex-Holo". It's still an important distinction to make because it's an extremely important part of her and who she is in the first place.
Plus, if you don't believe me, take an actual "indie" like Mint as our example. Constantly leeches off of Holos with collabs/raids/guest appearances, pays for Japan trips to go to HoloFES every year, did a mix for FWMC for free, rejected from Hololive multiple times - but, she's not entertaining or talented enough to actually get into HoloEN, and never will be. Yet, there's this constant effort made. If there wasn't something really special about Hololive itself, why would there be this separation? "Indies" are second-rate by definition, this is far from the only example of them acting this way (most of them aren't as "successful" at leeching off of Holos). But Nimi isn't an indie. She's Hololive material, always has been and always will be, and thus, is an "ex-Holo"
