By the same logic weed cannot be banned because you can just grow it if you know how to grow the plant. Conversely, stereoselective synthesis steps aren't exactly straightforward, most of the time it would be easier to just grow the plant. Some synthesis steps take days, and require organometallics and I wouldn't underestimate the risk of something breaking / you poisoning yourself. And while you don't need to understand the individual steps, it helps having some expertise if you're really going off what some publicly available (under)grad lectures tell you.
