In a way, it makes the situation even more tragic as she's going to feel horrible when it becomes impossible to deny. Someone who meant well and thought they were well informed urged their friends to do something on her behalf that has hurt them . . . It's not like People haven't been manipulated and tricked into doing something terrible based on identity-politics before.
