Pick an ugly top tier just because he is strong and you will be disgusted out of the game anyway, but pick a low tier you want to fuck and you will just hate yourself, hate the game, and then quit as well.
There must be balance.
Some people like the manliest of me, some like the hottest women, but no one has fun with a character they dislike. This is however only half of the story, you are also not likely to have fun with a character too hard to play that is also in the end not even worth mastering.
You just gotta be honest with yourself and accept the characters you like are garbage right now and just wait for a better dlc to be released that is also hot or cool. This is the developers mistake, not yours, and you cant sit waiting for buffs that might never come and might not be enough.
Marisas waited two years for meager stuff, and Lily got literally nothing during the bonanza ( I suspect this might be due to a full rework coming soon, this is the one character that is actually badly designed instead of just "weak", her entire kit can be reduced to one button and she would play the same)
