The first week or so of images I made looked like shit, and I wasted 2000+ goodboy points on pointless img2img trying to "finish" a sketch someone had made for me before I really knew what I was doing. Maybe I should revisit it...
You can use img2img one of two ways, or at least I do:
1. Take an existing image and try and change the character or something - I do this very rarely, it's less fun
2. To enhance "early" or "rough" output from the AI itself, or upscale it, or add detail, etc.
I only do 2 because I don't have all the upscaling toys you guys have.

IIRC DDIM starts to "shine" at really high steps? If you have the seed "locked" and aren't letting it randomize it, the in/out WILL look very similar by design.
